Unlearning Othering: Building Community & Breaking Barriers

Dive deep into the complexities of belonging and othering with ACT Circles! This engaging course is designed to enrich your understanding and empower you to make a difference in your community. You can expect dynamic discussions, insightful videos, and the opportunity to share your experiences.

Readings: We’ll meet for ten, three-hour sessions, exploring issues of relationship and community building assisted by our primary text, The Power of Bridging: How to Build a World Where We All Belong (2024, by John A. Powell), and thought-provoking readings from the ACT Manual. Please obtain a copy of this book before the Circle begins. The 300-page ACT Manual is provided. Our guiding text, The Power of Bridging, is available online. We have some books on hand for anyone with limited funds.

  • Each week, you’ll be welcomed into a supportive space where risk-taking and community-building thrive.

  • Together, we'll identify the behaviors, ways of thinking, and social structures that break relationships and prevent community. Using that understanding, we'll identify practices that foster belonging among us and in our institutions as together we build inclusive communities.

Dates/Time: Ten Thursday evenings September 11-November 13, 2025 with sessions from 6:00-9:00 p.m. CST.

Location: We will be meeting on Zoom.

Cost: No one is turned away for lack of funds. The actual cost of the workshop is $350, with option to pay-as-able. Sliding scale amounts are also available. People who identify as BIPOC can attend the workshop for $150. However, if your institution is sponsoring the workshop, we ask for full payment.

The actual costs of the workshop include curriculum development, materials provided, present facilitators, and scholarship opportunities to those who have limited economic means. If you need a reduced fee or an extended payment plan, please contact us at info@antiracismcommunity.org

“Community leaders are often reluctant to publicly admit what they do not know, such as the cause and effect of racism. ASDIC Circles provide a safe environment for the study of this issue. By bringing a group of leaders from diverse professions together, not only can leaders discuss issues at a level of common understanding (they face similar public scrutiny), but they can discover how the different entities interrelate and can collaborate to advance antiracism programs in the community. Educating and motivating staff to do antiracism work is a difficult endeavor. Through lessons learned and partnerships forged through ASDIC circles, leaders find they do not have to suffer it alone and can convey to staff, with conviction, not only the importance of the work to the community, but that the partners in our daily activities are also committed to the work.”

- Melanie Ford, former St. Louis County Attorney
